Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror and said you're just not who you want to be? Christianity is about looking at yourself in the mirror and realizing you are not who you are supposed to be. That can be a rather painful moment. But, the good news is that in Christ you can be who you are supposed to be!
"and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator." Colossians 3:10
This is where repentance comes in. Repentance is change. Stop going in one direction and start going in the other direction. Repentance is like driving on the freeway and you realize you went south when you should of gone north. So, you get off on the next off ramp, turn around, get back on the freeway in the right direction and off you go. Sometimes you get off and realize there is not a north bound off ramp so you have to take the streets to get to one. But, you do what you need to do to get back on the freeway headed in the right direction.
The right direction that creates the new self is the act of being renewed in knowledge in the image of your Creator. We must know our Creator. We do this by being renewed in our knowledge, both intellectual and experiential. This is why we go to church. This is why we read the Bible. This is why we read devotional books and blogs.
Faith, which is believing and acting upon what our knowledge of God tells us, renews us. Sometimes it is as simple as not lying and instead telling the truth in love. Remember the mirror? When I put on the new self I can look at myself in the mirror and know that by faith I am acting in the image of my Creator. I act in humility and love...
Father, help us to put on the new self and be renewed your image. Praise be to you in us today!
